Hi Peter!
I don’t have an actual diary, but wanted to tell you *from my experience* that it depends upon the doctor you see. I saw several different types of specialists who tested everything under the sun to rule out tumor, infection, etc. I now see a pain management doctor, and even though I hate pain meds have found the trick is to attack the headache before it attacks me! So, as soon as I start feeling it coming on (and I even have a magic number of 29.8), I take at least a prescription strength ibprofen. I’ve been fussed at for waiting too long, and letting it settle in before taking a painkiller. Since doing that, I haven’t had the severe vomiting, pain or blood pressure issues.
Mine are always the same, probably because my underlying problem is actually my neck. All of the muscles are connected, so my neck gets tight, then up around my ear and under my eye..always one side, nearly always the left. My blood pressure gets high (and I used to always have a low normal BP reading). So, you might want to add those readings to your diary. I also have found that a wet hand towel in the microwave for a minute or so helps alleviate the spasms I get, too. That idea came from the doctor who did a surface EMG and said in 35 years he’d never seen so much activity. I don’t know if this helps much, but we can hope they start paying more attention to this type of headache.
I’m new too, and thank you for this information! I’ve seen so many doctors about this over the past 15 years, and been told it was an “old wive’s tale”. That in itself tells me it’s been around a long time.
All I knew was that I’d never had headaches until my neck started bothering me. I have had surgery and several procedures due to arthritis and cord compression. This ALWAYS happens when the barometric pressure drops under 29.8. I have a reader, and use it..and my neck always “knows”. I feel better laying down with a hot compress, but still am nauseated, suffer blood pressure spikes, and in pain..sometimes for days.
Last October, my spouse had to take me to the ER for the nausea, high blood pressure spike (197/117), and pain to the point of almost fainting. After hearing it was all in my head for over a decade (no pun intended, because this is NOT funny) , the ER doctor TOLD ME it was due to the weather. Yay, ER doc who reads latest information! I was given no blood pressure medication, and my blood pressure went down within 45 minutes. Now I’m wondering if this might not be a cause of TIAs, too. So, off to read how I can best hope to prevent more issues. Thank you site admins!
